Poet Pat Mora will speak at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville on Wednesday evening, Oct. 10, 2012. The event will be 7 p.m. at the Union Theatre in the Arkansas Union. A book-signing reception follows.

Mora is a native of El Paso, Texas, and is of Mexican heritage. She has degrees from Texas Western College and the University of Texas at El Paso, and held several teaching and administrative positions.

Her visit, part of Hispanic Heritage Month, is sponsored by UA’s Latin American and Latino Studies program, according to its director, Steve Bell.

Mora’s collections include Chants (1984), Borders (1986), Communion (1991), Agua Santa: Holy Water (1997) and Adobe Odes (2006). She has a memoir, House of Houses (1997), and has written a number of acclaimed books for children. Mora is very active in education advocacy.

She also will conduct a biliteracy workshop for area public school teachers at Springdale Schools’ Professional Center on Wednesday morning and appear at an all-ages reception 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Springdale Public Library.
